The funny thing about being good at something is the tradeoffs you have to accept about being good that THAT thing. Let me explain. Personally, I’m great at sorting out user experience and considering other people’s perspectives. It’s why I’ve been user/customer facing for most of my professional career. Interesting choice for a slightly extroverted introverted fantasy literature nerd, but I love learning about why people choose certain paths and what inspires them to do so. I approach the tradeoff I mentioned. The tradeoff for me is that I’m not great at networking that’s focused on “business talk”.
It makes me feel awkward because I like to just learn about people as people and not necessarily what they do for work. Am I interested in your WHY and what drives you? Absolutely! But I am also intensely interested in your dorkdom. Do you have an opinion on whether Balrog’s have wings? Do you have a killer Lady Gaga cover act? Are you only thinking about getting home to check on your most recent sourdough starter? I’m already digressing…
The point is…CiviCO’s events are more my speed. Yes, we do the “business talk” during networking but the difference is the authenticity that everyone brings to our events. The objective is to create the space and hold the container for discussions to blossom beyond your typical networking chats. I love that we learn more about each other’s lived experiences and that conversations can delve into areas not usually found at a typical networking event.
Every June we have our Summer Social to bring together members, guests, sponsors, partners, and anyone that enjoys excellent company, good food, fun, and games! AKA – All the things those of us who aren’t comfortable with traditional networking love. This year the Summer Social is a little different…we’ve added some friendly competition.
Personal assumption that’s not grounded in any fact: The majority of you that receive this newsletter golf regularly or have at the very least, mini golfed in your life. I believe that’s a pretty fair hunch. Also, who doesn’t like mini golf?!
Gather your team and start practicing your putting because on June 12th you have the CiviCO Cup to compete for! Oh, and of course, don’t forget to plan your outfit. Make Happy Gilmore cringe with your fashion choices or just dress for a day on the links.

Like Shrek, we are all onions with many layers. The Summer Social is an easy place to peel back some of ours, share those with the rest of our community, and make new relationships in the process.
