John was inspired by Andrew Carnegie’s model of using libraries as a “hand up, not a hand out”, but vowed to be different from most charities. His promise was that Room to Read would be “run like a business”, with fast growth, a focus on hard data, low overhead costs and a relentless focus on scale. Today, over 25 million children in 20 low-income countries have access to a network of over 40,000 school libraries, with his work being endorsed by, amongst others, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Queen Rania, David Rubenstein, and Oprah Winfrey.
